Ten Things Christians Should Do During Ramadan

Ramadan

Through March 19th, Muslims globally are performing their mandatory Ramadan fast. During Ramadan, Muslims must refrain from eating, drinking, intercourse, lying, and even getting angry each day. Muslims are told that Allah might grant them paradise and pardon their past sins if they complete Ramadan perfectly – of course, this is not guaranteed.

During this time of deep spiritual confusion and weight for Muslims, Christ-followers have an even greater responsibility to show the love of Christ to them. As Christians, we are called to share our hope by making disciples of all nations and teaching the Lord’s commandments (Matthew 28:19-20). This is exactly what Jesus teaches in Matthew 5:14-16

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

With this verse in mind, let’s take a look at ten practical things Christians should do during Ramadan to testify to the Light of the World.

  1. Devote yourself to prayer

Praying is one of the most important things you can do during Ramadan. 1 Peter 5:8 reminds us that the devil is constantly trying to capture souls, including Muslims. Here are some ways you can pray:

  • When you wake up, pray that many Muslims would come to know Christ

  • When you are out and about, pause to say a personal prayer for Muslims you see

  • Before bed, pray that Jesus would reveal Himself to Muslims through dreams

  • Choose a day to fast and pick a Muslim country to pray over

  1. Be in the Word and Share the Word

Hebrews 4:12 tells us that God’s Word is a is a powerful weapon for spiritual warfare, “sharper than a two edged sword.” From Isaiah 55:11, we know that God’s word is always effective. Remain in Scripture and make it a habit to share it with your Muslim friends through conversation, personal notes, social media, and over text. Praying Scripture over Muslims is another great thing to do. Read here for powerful scripture passages to help you in this.

  1. Read Muslim background believer Testimonies

We like to highlight the many ways God calls Muslims out of the darkness of Islam, especially since many Christians in the West do not often hear these! You can read many of these testimonies here:

  1. Learn about Islam

Knowing about the culture and traditions of Muslims will help you share the gospel with them more effectively. An easy way to do this is to read one of our blogs every day and ask the Lord what He wants you to do in response.

You can also read through The Simple Truth and explore the basic differences between the Bible and the Quran.

  1. Learn about Ramadan

Few Christians know or even care to know what Ramadan is. Understanding Ramadan will increase your compassion for Muslims and will help you know how to pray for them

When learning about Islam, we should always go back to the words of the Quran and Hadith. Read some specific verses on Ramadan. You can also study the Islamic meaning behind fasting.

  1. Invest time building friendships with Muslims

Building a relationship with your Muslim friend gives you an avenue to talk about your relationship with Jesus. Set aside some intentional time during the month of Ramadan to interact with Muslims. Go to coffee shops together (in the evening when they are not fasting), or pick up the phone and check in on them.

Ask the Lord to guide your conversations and speak through you. Be sure to pray before and after your time with them.

  1. Share the Gospel with Muslims

Because Muslims are fasting and seeking, now is a great time to present them with what will truly satisfy – Jesus Christ. We know Christ is the Son of God, but Muslims are told He is only a prophet.

When you share, emphasize that Jesus is able to forgive all sins– past, present, and future. Explain His unconditional love and His deep desire for us to know Him.

  1. Engage in digital evangelism

While in-person evangelism is always preferable, don’t discount the impact of sharing the Gospel with Muslims digitally. Utilize your social media, messaging apps, and the Bible app to send Bible verse images, encouragement, and sermons to Muslims. You can find ideas to get started in Digital Evangelism: How Christians can start Witnessing to Muslims Online.

  1. Highlight the importance of sharing the Gospel with Muslims during Easter

When you gather for Easter, encourage your friends and family to reach out to the non-believers in their life. Share our free resources and consider watching some of our  online courses as a group. Make a family commitment to consistently pray for Muslims to be drawn to Jesus. We’ve included advice on sharing the gospel as a family in How your family can share the gospel with Muslims - Simple tips

  1.  Support Missions to Muslims

Seek the Lord and ask Him what He would have you do to reach Muslims during Ramadan. If you are led to support our efforts to reach Muslims for Christ, you can give here

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for the good news of Easter. Please provide me with many opportunities to share the Gospel with Muslims while they are fasting, and during Easter. Help me to speak in grace and truth. May my words and actions be a testament to your goodness and love. Amen.
