Digital Evangelism: How Christians can start Witnessing to Muslims Online

What do you picture when you think of evangelism? Maybe you envision handing out gospel tracts, witnessing on the streets, or even going on mission trips.

While these are a necessary part of the great commission, we often overlook the platform and audience right in front of us– the digital world. Today, we are surrounded by screens 24/7. They hang on our walls, live in our pockets, and we can’t live, work, or connect without them. Our personal devices constantly ring and buzz with the latest news.

This is often viewed as a negative, and it can be, but technology presents us with a unique opportunity. It allows us to share the Gospel instantly and widely. Reels, posts, and comments can certainly be meaningless distractions, but they can also be used purposefully to share the light of Christ.

Using digital evangelism is especially useful when sharing Christ’s love with Muslims. Most Muslims feel safer interacting with messages about Jesus online. For them, this is a layer of protection that shields them from their Muslim families and community’s judgment, criticism, and even persecution, just for asking questions. If you have Muslim followers or Muslim friends online, use digital evangelism!

How can Christians use digital evangelism to share the gospel with Muslims?

Share the gospel with all of your followers 

With its endless features, social media is one of the most powerful cultural influencers of our day. Nearly every American has access to it and checks it at least once daily. We use it to share everything, so why would we not use it to share the love of Jesus?

Look at the homescreen on your phone, count the number of social media apps you have, and look at your following. Every time you open one of these apps, you are entering a mission field. Your followers are your ministry. Use your social media pages to reflect Jesus by sharing Bible verses, prayers, and sermons. Share what Jesus has done in your life, like answered prayers or what life looks like as a true Christ-follower. Share your values and biblical beliefs through your everyday posts. 

Get creative and be bold, but always remember to “let your gentleness be evident to all” (Philippians 4:5). Your social media interactions with your Muslim and other unbelieving friends can be a powerful testament of God’s grace. Be intentional by liking or commenting on your Muslim friends' posts. Show them genuine love by direct messaging them to check on them and scheduling meet-ups to start conversations.

Directly share the Gospel Message with your Muslim friends

There is nothing like a friend who reaches out to you just to ask about your day or offer an uplifting word. Be this kind of friend to your Muslim neighbor! It only takes a minute to plant a seed.

Extend an invitation to connect, send an uplifting scripture verse, and give that word of encouragement or prayer over chat. Take the time to ask about their traditions and faith, and share about yours. Don’t hesitate to ask how you can pray for them. 

Digital communication is a great launchpad for in-person communication and connection. Sometimes, through the buffer of social media and being behind a screen, there is a layer of protection that allows people to be more open and honest. 

Use the digital tools for evangelism available to you!

Many Christians have used social media to expand the mission field and reach exponential numbers of people for Christ. Digital media like podcasts, apps, blogs, newsletters, shows, and even movies can be used to spread the gospel.
