Do Christians Worship three gods?

Dear Muslim Friend,

You may have been taught that Christians are blasphemers because they commit “shirk” by worshiping three gods. The Quran teaches: “O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your religion: Nor say of Allah aught but the truth. . . Say not ‘Trinity’: ‘desist: it will be better for you: for Allah is one Allah.” Quran 4:171

Have you taken the time to check the validity of this claim?

What does the “Triune God” mean?

The Quran teaches, incorrectly, that Christians worship three gods: God, Mary, and Jesus.

Christians agree that it is blasphemy to worship three gods. They worship the One True God, whose nature is triune: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (see the illustration).

You might ask, doesn’t 1 + 1 + 1 = 3?

The concept of the Triune God is not easy to understand. Below are examples to describe the three-in-one concept:

A man can be a son, a husband, and a father at the same time;

yet he is only one person.

The Triune God is not a simple One but a complex One consisting of three; One God in the three persons of the Father, the Word (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.

Important Truths about God

Here are truths from the Bible about the one true Holy God:

  • There is only one God. God is an undivided one. Monotheism is a core Christian belief.

    • “…The Lord is our God, the Lord is one!” Deuteronomy 6:4

  • God is three persons simultaneously and continuously. Even when God manifests Himself to us through one of His three Persons – as when Jesus came to earth and became man, or when the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples – the Triune God does not cease being the infinite three-in-one.

  • The Triune God is eternal.

    • “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word [Jesus], and the Holy Spirit: and these three are one.” 1 John 5:7

  • God has always been three: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and all of the three have always been divine.

    • “For us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live.” 1 Corinthians 8:6a

  • The Deity of each of the three persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – is qualitatively the same. They fully share divine attributes such as holiness, omnipotence, omnipresence, grace, love, etc.

    • “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19

The Saving Grace of the Triune God

The Bible clearly teaches that the Father loves us and wants us to live in eternal relationship with Him. The Son willingly paid the price to rescue us from eternal hell. The Holy Spirit awakens man’s conscience and convicts him of his sins (John 16:7–8), so that he can receive Christ as the Savior.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

There is no salvation except that which is offered by God — the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit — the only true and living God. Maybe you get angry or confused when you read the expression “the Son of God.” Be assured that Christians do not accept the concept that Jesus came as a result of a physical relationship between God and Mary; this is blasphemy. Sonship in the Bible holds a very different meaning.

Read “Why do you call Jesus the Son of God?” and find out the true meaning of this expression.
