Sharing Jesus with family members who are not Christians

When we have family members who are not Christians, it can be a heavy weight on our hearts. But you can be a light in their life and point them to Christ through your words and actions. Sharing Jesus with family members who are not Christians can be challenging. Here are a few tips:

Pray for them regularly. The Bible tells us the prayers of the righteous are effective (James 5:16), meaning God listens to your prayers! He is always calling people to Him, and even if you don’t see the fruit right away, you know that God hears your prayers and also wants your family members to know Jesus.

Build strong relationships with your family members who are not Christians. Do not cut them off for having different beliefs than you – after all, you used to not believe in Christ at one point too! Instead, be an unconditionally loving and trustworthy friend that they know they can rely on. This will help them feel comfortable coming to you if they have hard times or need support.

Be respectful of their beliefs. One of the quickest ways to shut your family member down from talking to you is by judging them and talking poorly about their decisions or beliefs. They will not feel comfortable opening up to you and getting personal, which is important when talking about Christ!

Share your testimony with your family members who aren’t Christians. Look for opportunities to talk about Jesus in everyday conversations, but even more so, take time to say, “Have I told you why I believe in Christ?” and explain His work in your life!

Invite your family members to church and other Christian events. Is there a great speaker coming to your church’s men’s or women’s conference? Or a concert for a Christian band that you can go to? These are great and low-pressure ways to spend time together and expose your family member who doesn’t believe in Jesus to the fruits of living as Christ-followers.
